ALC Holds Emergency Meeting on Turkish Operation in Syria

ANKARA – The Arab League Council (ALC) will hold an emergency meeting at the level of foreign ministers on Saturday to discuss the situation surrounding the Turkish military operation in northern Syria.
The meeting, which will focus on what the organization’s statement called “Turkish aggression”, should take place at the request of Egypt.
On Wednesday, Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring in northern Syria, which targeted the predominantly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Daesh terrorist group. The offensive aims to drive out Turkish militants.
Ankara justified its actions by claiming that the SDF was affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which Turkey describes as a terrorist organization.
The operation was condemned by Syria, most Arab countries and Western countries.
The United States has even warned that Turkey could be sanctioned for the operation, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to continue the offensive.
