WEF President Welcomes China’s Progress in Poverty Reduction and Calls for Multilateralism

DAVOS – China’s progress towards eradicating poverty is unprecedented and its efforts to promote multilateralism should be embraced by all members of the global community for common development, said the chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
This year marks the 50th anniversary of WEF, also known as the Davos Forum, which brought together politicians, businessmen and representatives of social and cultural circles to find solutions to the problems of the world.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are at the heart of the current WEF meeting.
“The objectives are very ambitious. The overall objective is then to eradicate all extreme poverty by 2030,” on which China has an impressive record, Borge Brende, an experienced Norwegian politician and diplomat, told Xinhua.
For decades, “we have seen more people come out of extreme poverty in China, maybe 800 million people. We have never seen so many people come out of extreme poverty in the history of the humanity “is therefore” a great achievement of China,” said Brende.
Brende said that although China is developing very rapidly, there are still some poor regions in the country, which makes the country’s economic growth more complex.
“So, China must continue to grow … growth must now take more care of clean water and clean air. It must also create jobs higher up the value chain,” said Brende.
“It will be very interesting to follow China to move forward, how it will continue to make its people prosper while balancing it with nature and inclusion,” he added.
To ensure the world achievement the Sustainable Development Goals, Brende said he agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks in Davos three years ago that, in the face of common challenges, multilateralism and collaboration are the way to go.
“The precondition for economic growth, also strongly emphasized by President Xi in Davos in 2017, is that we must continue to trade among ourselves,” said Brende, adding that “begging your neighbour” does not work.
Brende noted that “what works is that you have to make your neighbor prosper, and that’s what we’ve done with globalization, with trade between us.”
The multilateral system must renew itself because the world has changed. This year will be the very first year in which Asia accounts for more than 50% of global GDP, he said.
According to the WEF, in 2020, the GDP of Asia will exceed the GDP of the rest of the world combined. By 2030, the region is expected to contribute around 60% of global growth.
The way forward for the world should be multilateralism and collaboration, not the so-called “decoupling” between China and the United States, he said.
“Here, we hope there will be no decoupling … I hope that China and the United States can learn from the trade agreement that was signed in Washington DC last week and continue to work together. The competition is a little bit very good, but also as in sport, you have to collaborate with those with whom you compete in a good sports spirit.”
