Erdogan Arrives in Islamabad for Two-Day Visit

ISLAMABAD – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for a two-day trip aimed at strengthening bilateral strategic partnership and economic ties.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed the Turkish President and his wife Emine Erdoğan as they disembarked from the plane at Nur Khan Air Base.
Pakistani PM personally drove President Erdogan and the Turkish first lady from the airport to the Prime Minister’s office.
Guard of honor was handed over to the Turkish President by intelligently involved personnel of the Pakistani armed forces.
Posters welcoming the Turkish president were installed in the Pakistani capital before his arrival.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has announced that the Turkish president will travel to Pakistan from February 13 to 14 to underscore “traditional solidarity and affinity” between the two countries and to “deepen and broaden the flourishing Pakistan-Turkey strategic partnership”.
Erdogan, who is accompanied during the trip by members of his cabinet, senior government officials, and personalities from the Turkish business community, would co-chair with Pakistani Prime minister Imran Khan the 6th session of the Pakistan-Turkey High Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), addressing a session of Parliament on Friday for the fourth record time and speaking at the Pakistan-Turkey Business and Investment Forum.
He will also meet Pakistani President Arif Alvi during the trip.
Addressing the Anadolu agency, Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Mustafa Yurdakul said that President Erdogan’s visit to Islamabad is a historic event and “a major step towards exemplary bilateral relations between the two countries”.
Prime Minister Imran is expected to invite Turkey to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
He said in an interview to a Turkish journalist: “We hope to involve them in the use of CPEC for further connectivity, and we hope to involve Turkey in this [CPEC]”.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Turkish ambassador said that the CPEC was almost finished and that Turkey wished to be part of the special economic zones which will be established under the project.
Imran Khan wants Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan’s mining sector and engage in technology transfer projects.
Regarding proposals to promote economic ties: “The two sides place a strong emphasis on establishing solid economic relations.”
Turkey and Pakistan are expected to sign a number of important agreements / memoranda of understanding to formalize some of the agreements to be concluded at the HLSCC meeting.
The HLSCC is the highest-level decision-making forum that provides strategic direction to linkages.
The HLSCC has seven joint working groups working on policy coordination, trade and investment, energy, banking and finance, transport and communications, culture and tourism and education.
HLSCC meetings are held alternately in Islamabad and Ankara.
Strict security measures have been taken before the Turkish president’s arrival and more than 2,000 police and officers will be on duty, according to the Islamabad police spokesman.
