IAEA Confirms Iran’s Plans to Produce Metal Uranium

TEHRAN – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed Iran’s plans to produce metallic uranium to produce new fuel for a research reactor.
“The IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, today briefed IAEA Member States on recent developments regarding Iran’s plans to conduct R&D activities on production of uranium metal as part of its stated goal of designing an improved type of fuel for Tehran’s research reactor,” IAEA said in a statement, Reuters reported Thursday.
According to the IAEA report, Iran told the agency on Wednesday that “there are no limitations to (its) R&D activities” and “modification and installation of equipment necessary for the mentioned R&D activities has already started at its fuel plate manufacturing plant in Isfahan.”
Earlier Wednesday, Iran’s permanent ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Kazem Gharibabadi, said the Islamic Republic had started development of new fuel for the Tehran reactor.
“This activity takes place in three stages, and in the first stage, metallic uranium is produced from natural uranium,” he said, adding that the IAEA Director General released a report on Wednesday and informed member countries of the matter.
“This measure will technically place Iran among the leading countries in the production of new fuels,” he said.
Gharibabadi went on to say that all of these steps have been notified to the Agency and that IAEA inspectors also visited the fuel plate factory three days ago.
