India COVID-19 Cases Pass 200,000 But Peak Yet to Come: Officials

NEW DELHI – India has become the seventh most affected country by COVID-19 as cases surpassed 200,000 on Tuesday.
The figure has almost doubled in the past 15 days, which means that India also has the fourth fastest-growing epidemic of COVID-19 in the world.
Despite this huge increase in numbers, Indian health officials say the peak has not yet come.
“We are far from a peak of COVID-19 cases. We need to understand the extent of the spread of the disease, instead of talking about community transmission,” said Nivedita Gupta, a scientist at the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).
The second most populous country in the world now adds more than 7,000 cases a day, just behind the United States, Russia and Brazil.
India, on average, added 7,384 cases per day in the past week – compared to 21,649 in Brazil, 21,282 in the United States and 8,700 in Russia.
The number of coronavirus cases is skyrocketing and rural areas are becoming new homes. New infections have been reported among the millions of migrants returning to the countryside due to isolation in urban areas.
The Indian Ministry of Health has stated that 73% of deaths from coronavirus in India were due to people with underlying health conditions.
The Indian federal drug regulator has approved the use of remdesivir, the new drug from Gilead Sciences Inc, to treat COVID-19 patients in an emergency.
Remdesivir is the first drug to show positive results in COVID-19 patients in formal clinical trials.
The drug received emergency use approval from the US Food and Drug Administration last month and has received approval from Japanese health authorities.
