Khalili Meets Pakistan’s FM, Discusses Peace in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD – Mohammad Karim Khalili, leader of Hizb-e-Wahdat on his visit to Pakistan met with Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan Foreign Minister on Tuesday, both discussed the Afghan peace process, bilateral relations, and stability in Afghanistan.
Pakistan Foreign Ministry stated, “The Foreign Minister reiterated Pakistan’s consistent support for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan. He underscored that after the Afghans, Pakistan was the country most desirous of peace in Afghanistan. The Foreign Minister underlined that the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan were linked through immutable bonds of history, faith, culture and traditions. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Afghanistan in all fields.”
Qureshi highlighted various steps taken by Pakistan to strengthen bilateral, transit trade and the introduction of revised visa policy to facilitate the Afghan public.
Pakistan’s foreign minister was quoted in the statement that “there was no military solution of the Afghan conflict and that a negotiated political settlement was the only way forward”.
Qureshi also stressed on importance of inclusive, broad based and comprehensive solutions through Afghan-owned peace process.
According to Qureshi, Afghan leadership should grab the Afghan-led peace process as an opportunity to establish a prolonged peace in the country.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister also warned of spoilers within Afghanistan and outside, and called on all sides to reduce violence.
“The Foreign Minister reiterated Pakistan’s call on all sides to take measures for reduction in violence leading to ceasefire. He also cautioned against the role of ‘spoilers’ within and outside Afghanistan, who did not wish to see return of peace in Afghanistan and the region. Foreign Minister Qureshi further expressed the hope that the return of peace and stability in Afghanistan would provide a strong impetus to economic development, regional integration, and connectivity, benefitting Afghanistan and the region,” the statement read.
Foreign Minister Qureshi emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to a dignified return of Afghan refugees to their homeland.
Khalili appreciated Pakistan’s support to the Afghan peace process and for hosting millions of Afghan refugees and expressed his gratitude in regards to the revised Pakistani visa process.
Earlier, Hizb-e-Wahdat Leader and former Vice President met with Asad Qaiser, Pakistani National Assembly Speaker, besides other issues both discussed the Afghan peace process.
Qaiser said that “peaceful Afghanistan is imperative for the development and prosperity of the region. He said that Pakistani and Afghan people were bound in everlasting ties of religion, brotherhood, history, and culture,” Khalili’s office noted in a statement.
The visit of Muhammad Karim Khalili is part of Pakistan’s ongoing policy to reach out to political leadership in Afghanistan to forge a common understanding on the Afghan peace process and deepen people-to-people linkages, the statement concluded.
Khalili is expected to meet Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan and other officials in the next two days of his visits.
