Kidnappers Abduct Schoolchildren in Northwest Nigeria: Official

ABUJA, Nigeria – Kidnappers abducted more than 300 schoolchildren in Zamfara state, northwest Nigeria, a spokesperson for the state governor said on Friday, but declined to say how many people were taken away or provide more details.
The state police spokesperson did not immediately respond to calls and messages seeking comment.
According to the Punch newspaper, gunmen targeted a secondary school in the Jangebe village on Thursday night. The school staff said that the militants arrived at the school on motorcycles and pickup trucks shortly after midnight.
This is the second such kidnapping in just over a week in northern Nigeria, where an upsurge in armed militancy in the northwest has led to a widespread and deepening breach of security.
Last week, unidentified gunmen killed a student in an overnight attack on a boarding school in the north-central Nigerian state of Niger and kidnapped 42 people, including 27 students. The hostages have not yet been released.
