Marcus Rashford is Rapidly Becoming One of the League’s Best Players

LISBON – Marcus Rashford continued his scintillating form with a brace against Tottenham Hotspur in a performance which would have caught the attention of the footballing world.
The 22-year-old is enjoying the best spell of his career in front of goal and looks set to blow his previous best goalscoring season out of the water.
He is oozing confidence and every time the ball arrives at his feet. His first thought is always how to hurt the opposition.
The high-profile summer departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez resulted in Rashford carrying the goalscoring burden on his shoulders after no replacements were signed.
This was a man who hadn’t scored more than 10 Premier League goals in a campaign before.
When Anthony Martial was out injured and Rashford was deployed in the number 9 position, it was hard to see where Rashford’s next shot was going to come from let alone a goal.
But since scoring for England against Bulgaria and ending his open play goal drought, Rashford’s performances and goalscoring output have elevated to a whole new level.
The significant change in form has come since he has been moved back into his favored left-wing role.
Coming in off that left channel is where he is at his devastating best, he can commit defenders with his trickery and pace. He can make darting runs in behind and he can cut inside and unleash his trademark venomous wicked and dipping strikes, which caught Paulo Gazzaniga out for United’s opener.
His former manager had always believed that he would be better from the left and unfortunately for Jose Mourinho he was proved right much to his team’s detriment.
The Portuguese coach told Amazon Prime Video’s live coverage, about Rashford: “As I always told, from the left and not as a nine, from the left. I knew it, I told the boys. I told him exactly the way he does things. He was good, he was really good.”
It’s not just the goalscoring charts where Rashford is leading the way, he is currently ranking top for United with most successful dribbles (30), most shots on target (20), most chances created (19) and most goal involvements (13).
He has stepped up to the plate, when United desperately needed him to.
Marcus Rashford now has 12 goals this season, and nine in 15 Premier League games. He has also managed to contribute four assists along the way too.
Since making his breakthrough at United in the 2015/16 campaign under Louis van Gaal, Rashford hasn’t scored more than 13 goals in all competitions in a season.
We are in early Decemeber and United’s number 10 requires only two more goals to produce a new personal best. The question is how many could he end up with?
Rashford has scored more Premier League goals than Harry Kane, Roberto Firmino, Raheem Sterling and Mo Salah this season.
He is currently tied with Sergio Aguero and Sadio Mane, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (10), Tammy Abraham (11) and Jamie Vardy (14) have scored more than United’s talisman.
But after coming through a torrid spell, Rashford now has 12 goals in 13 games for club and country, he is well and truly in the midst of a fruitful purple patch.
He would have been breathing down Vardy’s neck if it wasn’t for the two penalties he had missed against Crystal Palace and Norwich City.
He will be looking to break new ground and hit the 20 goal barrier in a Premier League season for the first time.
Rashford has to keep this level of consistency up. If he does, the ceiling is scary for him. United are lucky to have a player of his ability right now, and for many years into the future.
