No Guarantee Any Covid-19 Vaccine in Development will Work: WHO Chief

GENEVA – World Health Organization (WHO) chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the primary health organization had no guarantees whether a single Covid-19 vaccine currently in development would work.
In a virtual press conference, the WHO chief said: “We have no guarantee that a single vaccine currently in development will work.”
“The more candidates we test, the more likely we are to have a safe and effective vaccine,” he added.
According to WHO, nearly 200 vaccines against Covid-19 are currently in clinical and preclinical testing.
“The history of vaccine development tells us that some will fail, and some will succeed,” Ghebreyesus said.
Besides, WHO, in collaboration with the Global Vaccine Alliance Group Gavi and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), has launched a COVAX program.
The goal of the collaboration is to accelerate the development of Covid-19 vaccines and to enable equitable access for all countries of the world.
The COVAX mechanism allows governments to spread the risk of vaccine development and ensure that their populations can have early access to effective vaccines.
Most importantly, the COVAX facility is the mechanism that will enable a coordinated deployment globally for the most significant possible impact.
The facility will help bring the pandemic under control, save lives, accelerate economic recovery and ensure that the vaccine race is a collaboration, not a competition, according to the WHO chief.
“The fastest way to end the pandemic and accelerate the global economic recovery is to ensure that some people are vaccinated in all countries, not all people in some countries,” he noted.
