Pakistan to Host World Environment Day Today

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan will host its first-ever World Environment Day celebrations today (March 1) to raise awareness among the masses and stakeholders alike the rest of the world on effective actions to join hands to preserve the environment, rapidly declining ecology and ecosystems due to climate change.
The announcement of the nomination of Pakistan as host country was made on the sidelines of the 5th Virtual Meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) which was held on February 22 in Nairboi, Kenya.
The Pakistani Prime Minister’s Special Assistant (SAPM) on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, also participated in UNEA-5 with the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Inger Andersen, to recognize the urgency to prevent, stop and reverse the degradation of ecosystems in the world.
Pakistan will host the globally celebrated World Environment Day 2021 this year in partnership with UNEP, where the latter’s Executive Director will virtually join in the celebrations accompanied by SAPM.
Pakistan was chosen as the host country to host World Environment Day in recognition of its global leadership in environmental conservation and protection through various policies and programs implemented in the country.
Pakistan had also achieved the Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-13) of climate action by the 2030 deadline last year.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Clean Green Pakistan Program, Ten Billion Tree Tsunami (TBTTP) Program, Protected Areas Initiatives, Single Use Plastic Bag Banning, Recharge Pakistan Program and Urban Resilient Human Settlement Project were the main initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Climate Change and have been hailed by the international community as real interventions for the protection and healing of the environment.
This year’s theme was “Restoring Ecosystems” with an increased focus on resetting the relationship with nature and promoting initiatives for nature-based solutions.
It is the flagship United Nations day for global environmental awareness and action.
Over the years, it has grown into the world’s largest platform for public awareness of the environment and is celebrated by millions of people around the world.
The celebration of World Environment Day will coincide with the official launch of the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.
The United Nations Decade runs from 2021 to 2030, which is also the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals and the time frame that scientists have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.
