Rahmani Heads a Delegation to Pakistan to Discuss Peace, Cooperation

KABUL – Wolesi Jirga Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani and a group of lawmakers left Kabul on Friday for Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani officials on the peace process, relations between parliaments of the two countries and other current topics, said Abdul Qadir Zazai Watandost, head of the secretariat of the parliament.
Watandost said the trip is happening based on the invitation of Asad Qaiser, the speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
He said that will hold talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, Asad Qaiser, the speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi among other high-ranking officials.
Watandost said three topics will be in their meetings: relations between parliaments of the two countries, the Afghan peace process, and building coordination between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said they will aks Pakistan to make more efforts for peace in Afghanistan.
Wadandost added that the plight of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and the visa problem for Afghan citizens will also be discussed in their meetings with Pakistani officials.
The trip comes days after Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar accompanied by Senate Speaker Fazl Hadi Muslimyar visited Pakistan earlier this week.
The peace negotiations are underway in Doha between teams from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban. The two sides have held over 10 meetings at contact groups level but have not started direct negotiations so far over two disputed points on the procedural rules for the talks.
