Qureshi: Pakistan Supports a United, Democratic and Sovereign Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi reportedly cautioned Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar of “spoilers” in the Afghan peace process, suggesting to be vigilant.
During a meeting with the Hekmatyar in Islamabad, Qureshi reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen “the close fraternal relations between the two countries”, according to a statement released by the Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
Qureshi “underlined the importance of exercising vigilance and guarding against the role of ‘spoilers’, both within and outside,” the statement read.
“Pakistan has always supported a peaceful, stable, united, democratic, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan,” he said, adding his country “facilitated the process that culminated in the U.S.-Taliban Peace Agreement in Doha on 29 February 2020 and supported the commencement of Intra-Afghan Negotiations.”
The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of an inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive political settlement through an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process, urging “all parties must honour their respective commitments and work for reduction in violence leading to ceasefire.”
Meanwhile, he also highlighted steps taken to support “Afghanistan on its path to reconstruction and economic development as well as for improved transit and bilateral trade relations, as he underlined “the return of Afghan refugees to their homeland with dignity and honor.”
