Russia Urges Gulf States to Form Common Security Mechanism

MOSCOW – Russia has urged the Gulf states to consider a common security mechanism for the region, said the country’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, adding that the time for unilateral action is over.
“We have suggested to the Gulf countries to think about collective security mechanisms … starting with confidence-building measures and inviting each other to military exercises,” Lavrov said on Wednesday at a conference on security in New Delhi.
Tensions in the Gulf increased after the United States assassinated Iranian military commander, General Qassem Suleimani, and a retaliatory missile attack by Iran against American forces in Iraq.
“Since talking about … [the] Gulf, we have been very concerned about what is going on there,” said Lavrov.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is also participating in the Delhi conference which comes just a day after Britain, France and Germany officially accused Tehran of violating the terms of its 2015 agreement to curb its nuclear program, which could lead to the reimposition of UN sanctions.
The Iranian news agency Fars quoted Zarif as saying overnight that the use of the disputed settlement mechanism was legally baseless and a strategic error.
Lavrov said unilateral sanctions are a problem in today’s world.
“So, the 21st century is the time when we have to get rid of all the methods of international relations that taste like colonial and neo-colonial times. And the sanctions, the sanctions imposed unilaterally, will not work,” he said.
After withdrawing from Iran deal, U.S. cracked down on sanctions on Iran and gradually escalated “maximum pressure” campaign targeting Islamic Republic oil, mining and other industries.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday called on US President Donald Trump to replace the Iranian nuclear deal with his own new pact to ensure the Islamic Republic does not have an atomic weapon.
Trump said in a tweet that he agreed with Johnson for a “Trump deal”.
US Assistant National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger will also speak at the Delhi meeting on Thursday.
