Summit of BRICS Countries to Start in Brazilian Capital

BRASILIA – The two-day 11th BRICS member-state summit-Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa-will start in Brasilia on Wednesday and will put together the members of the international organization aimed at promoting global multipolarity.
The event is being held in Brazil as it holds this year’s rotating BRICS presidency. Together with Russian President Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping, their South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will take part in the meeting.
It is planned that the leaders of the five emerging economies will hold an open format meeting and discuss economic development cooperation, BRICS member states’ strategic partnership concerns, investments, and mutually beneficial projects.
Putin will speak about the association’s 2020 presidency goals including a “harmonious transition” from Brazil’s presidency and enhancing the BRICS countries’ strategic partnership.
Russia also aims to strengthen cooperation between the BRICS states in the United Nations and calls for the use of military power without the approval of the United Nations Security Council, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov wrote in a BRICS media article.
A closed meeting is also scheduled between the members of the BRICS. According to Kremlin assistant Yury Ushakov, the Russian president would talk about US acts that could lead to the destruction of the national security system, such as withdrawal from strategic arms control treaties.
In addition, on the grounds of the conference, a number of separate bilateral meetings will take place. Putin will meet Modi and Xi on Wednesday, while the Russian president will meet his Brazilian counterpart on Thursday.
The representatives of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will also attend the BRICS Business Council meeting and the BRICS Business Forum and will be briefed on the outcomes of the work of the Council.
In addition, the New Development Bank, developed by BRICS to improve cooperation and fund joint projects, will also brief the leaders of the BRICS on the results of their activities.
