Trump Ready for Talks with Tehran

WASHINGTON – In a letter to the United Nations Security Council, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, said that the United States was ready to negotiate “with the aim of preventing any further threat to international peace and security or escalation by the Iranian regime,” Asian Lite News reported Thursday.
In a letter to the United Nations Security Council, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, said that the United States was ready to negotiate “with the aim of preventing any further threat to international peace and security or escalation by the Iranian regime. ”
The United States would take additional “if necessary” measures in the Middle East to protect its interests, the letter added.
The United States has declared itself “ready to enter into serious negotiations without preconditions” with Iran after the exchange of hostilities between the countries.
In a letter to the UN, the United States justified the murder of Iranian general Qassim Soleimani as an act of self-defence, the BBC reported on Thursday.
The murder of Soleimani was justified, according to the letter, under article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, which obliges states to “immediately report” to the Security Council any measure taken in the exercise of the right of self-defence.
Iran responded by firing missiles at air bases housing US forces in Iraq. He also told the UN that it was an act of self-defence.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called the missile attacks a “slap” for the United States and called for an end to the American presence in the Middle East. Iran also cited article 51 to justify its attack on American bases.
US Vice President Mike Pence told mainstream media that the “information” indicated that Iran had asked its allied militias not to attack the American targets.
The US House of Representatives has scheduled a vote on Thursday to limit President Donald Trump’s ability to wage war on Iran without specific congressional approval.
But Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, said that the US offer of talks was “incredible” as the United States continued to apply harsh economic sanctions on Iran.
In the Iranian letter, Revanche wrote that Tehran “is not seeking escalation or war” after exercising its right to self defence by taking a “measured and proportionate military response targeting an American air base in Iraq”.
“The operation was precise and aimed at military objectives, thus leaving no collateral damage to civilians and civilian objects in the region,” he wrote.
President Donald Trump has already threatened military action against Iran if it targeted American personnel and bases, but he has not announced any military action, claiming that the attack on Iran caused no casualties.
“No American was injured in last night’s attack by the Iranian regime,” he said.
“Iran appears to be withdrawing, which is a good thing for all concerned,” he added.
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on a resolution on Thursday to force Trump to suspend further military action against Iran unless Congress authorizes it.
“Congressmen have serious and urgent concerns about the administration’s decision to start hostilities against Iran and its lack of strategy to move forward,” said Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, in a press release.
It was Iran’s most direct attack on the United States since the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was taken in 1979.
On Wednesday, 16 missiles were launched from at least three sites in Iran, said Secretary of Defence Mark Esper.
At least 11 of them hit the Al-Asad air base, west of Baghdad, and at least one more hit the Irbil base, he said. Several other missiles landed some distance from the targets.
