Turkey Plays Key Role in the Fight Against Terrorism: NATO

ANKARA – The NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, on Monday said that Turkey has played a key role in the fight against terrorism, providing infrastructure and platforms for the liberation of territories controlled by Daesh.
Speaking at the 66th annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Jens Stoltenberg made the comments while responding to questions from parliamentarians.
Speaking during the session, German lawmaker and member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Jurgen Trittin, asserted that Turkey does not share NATO’s values and that there is no rule of law in the country.
Trittin also claimed that Turkey was violating the UN arms embargo in Libya and threatening German ships in the eastern Mediterranean.
“Shouldn’t we see Turkey not as a partner, but as a spoiler and a threat to NATO?” he said.
In response, Stoltenberg said: “Turkey is a valuable ally and an important ally because it plays a key role, for example, in the fight against international terrorism.”
He said Turkey was NATO’s only ally to fight Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
“They played an important role in providing the infrastructure and platforms to liberate the territories controlled by ISIS.”
“No other ally has suffered more terrorist attacks than Turkey, and no other ally is hosting more refugees – nearly 4 million refugees,” he added.
Stoltenberg also said he expressed his concerns over Turkey’s decision to purchase Russian S-400 air defense systems and developments in Libya and the Eastern Mediterranean with Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during his recent visit to Ankara.
The head of the Turkish delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Osman Askin Bak, responding to Trittin said: “Turkey is a democratic country, a valuable ally, and Turkey has taken part in all NATO missions.”
“Turkey, as the secretary general said, is the only country fighting against Daesh chest to chest on the ground in Syria.”
