UEFA ‘to Return to Traditional Champions League Format’ for 2020-21 Season

UEFA plans to return to the traditional Champions League format next year despite the success of this summer’s final tournament in Portugal, according to reports.
The quarter-finals and two-legged semi-finals have been dropped this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The shutdown of football shattered the traditional Champions League schedule between March and May, but UEFA bosses have reshaped the final stages of the competition to ensure it is successful.
One-leg quarter-finals were played in a World Cup-style event in Portugal earlier this month, with one-off semi-finals slated for next week ahead of Sunday’s final.
The changed format has been well received by fans, but The Telegraph reports that it will not be repeated during the 2020-2021 campaign.
This dovetails with comments from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin last week when he said a resumption of the final tournament next year would be “impossible” as the football calendar is already approaching the saturation point.
Ceferin said: “It could be interesting in the future, but I don’t think we can do it, the schedule is so dense.”
“We don’t plan to do the same competition next year.”
