West Tries to “Dictate” Ideology, “Obsolete” Liberalism: Putin

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin harshly criticized the West for trying to “dictate” its ideology to the world, calling liberal values “obsolete” because they were rejected by the majority of Westerners, Press Tv reported Friday.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Putin said the Liberals “just can not dictate anything to anyone, as they have tried to do in the last few decades.”
He explained that the liberal idea had “exceeded its objective” while the public in Europe was opposed to immigration, open borders and multiculturalism.
Putin has clearly made these remarks to the attention of extreme right-wing European leaders, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, and US President Donald Trump.
“So, the liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population,” he added.
The Russian leader said that liberalism was used as an ideological force in the West, which he reprimanded for promoting homosexuality and the fluidity of relations between the sexes.
“Traditional values are more stable and more important to millions of people than this liberal idea, which I believe really does exist,” said Putin.
EU President Donald Tusk on Friday delivered his Russian counterpart in unusually non-diplomatic language, saying he “strongly disagreed” with Putin.
“What I find really obsolete is authoritarianism, personality cults, the rule of the oligarchs, even if sometimes they may seem effective,” he said in Osaka, Japan, for a meeting of the group of 20 nations.
Relations between Moscow and the West have deteriorated since 2014, when Crimea joined Russia following a referendum in which more than 90% of the participants voted in favour of this initiative. The West describes the reunification as annexation of Ukrainian territory by Russia.
By lining up on Ukraine’s side, the EU and some other Western countries have followed Washington’s example by imposing several rounds of sanctions against Moscow.
