Xi Expounds on Sustainable Development at G20 Meeting

BEIJING – Chinese President, Xi Jinping, on Sunday stressed the critical importance of continuously advancing global poverty reduction to create an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future.
“We need substantial action on Covid-19 more than ever,” Xi said during his participation in Session II of the G20 summit in Riyadh via video link in Beijing.
Xi stressed the need to maintain the vision of putting development first. He called for efforts to strengthen development cooperation and reduce the North-South divide in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Calling for the adoption of comprehensive and balanced policies, Xi said targeted measures should be taken to tackle poverty caused by Covid-19.
He underscored the efforts to ease the debt burden of developing countries, continue to provide them with the necessary financial support, as well as boost infrastructure construction and connectivity.
On creating a favorable international economic environment, Xi called for lowering tariff and non-tariff barriers, reducing poverty and economic growth through trade, and helping the developing countries to better integrate into the global market.
Highlighting the role of digital technology in poverty reduction, he urged efforts to create more opportunities for small and medium enterprises, women, youth and other vulnerable groups to move from poverty to prosperity.
He further pointed out that China is on the verge of reaching the goal of eliminating absolute poverty, 10 years ahead of the timetable set by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In the past 40 years of reform and opening up, more than 700 million people in China have been lifted out of poverty, contributing more than 70% of poverty reduction in the world, Xi added.
China is ready to work with other countries to build a better world free from poverty and enjoying common development, Xi said.
