Afghanistan to Build Major Medicine Plant in Kandahar

KABUL – Afghanistan is building a major medicine factory in Kandahar province, once the militants’ hotbed in the country’s south, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting a local newspaper report on Wednesday.
Construction work on the building of the factory, San Pharma, costing up to US$31 million and equipped with international standards, has been semi-completed, the report revealed.
“The factory’s construction work would be completed by 2020 and its drugs would be exported abroad as well,” the report said.
According to the report, the plant’s products could replace substandard medicine sold in the market, besides producing some food.
The factory would be operated under the Afghan Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
MoPH has earlier said that the country imports medicines worth more than US$600 million annually despite a surge in domestic production.
