Brexit Vote: The European Union Closes the Ranks in Response

BRUSSELS – The European Union has presented a unified front after UK legislators have reneged on concessions and voted against a Brexit deal. Bloc leaders said the UK had to justify itself if it wanted an extension, DW reported Wednesday.
EU leaders closed on Wednesday, lamenting Britain’s rejection of an agreement on Brexit, while cautiously maintaining the idea of an extension.
Despite concessions granting a legal limit to the Irish back-stop, a question that has long vexed British lawmakers, the UK Parliament rejected an exit agreement from the EU.
Brexit chief negotiator for the EU, Michel Barnier, said Brussels had nothing left to offer and now had to prepare for the possibility of a complicated divorce. “The EU has done everything in its power to help conclude the withdrawal agreement,” commented Barnier. “The stalemate can only be solved in the #UK, and our” no agreement “preparations are more important than ever.”
For Pierre Moscovici, Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxes and Customs, this agreement was the “last chance” for an agreement on Brexit and the EU authorities were relatively prepared as regards the customs procedure in case of exit without agreement. “It’s time for the British to say what they want, now that they have said what they do not want,” Moscovici said on French television.
Before the vote, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, told Britain: “There will be no third chance”. He added that any extension should be approved by the remaining 27 EU countries and should end before the May European elections.
