China Urges World to Recognize Pakistan’s Efforts to Counter-Terrorism Financing

BEIJING – China on Thursday called on the international community to recognize Pakistan’s political will and efforts to strengthen the country’s financing law against terrorism.
“Pakistan has made great efforts to strengthen its national anti-terrorism funding system with visible progress, Pakistan’s political will and active efforts must be recognized and encouraged by the international community,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.
The spokesperson commented on the report on the action plan that Pakistan had recently submitted to the Joint Financial Action Task Force (FATF) meeting in Beijing.
A high-level Pakistani delegation, headed by Minister of Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar, presented the country’s compliance report during three-day talks with the global money laundering watchdog, which began on January 21.
The spokesperson hoped that the FATF would continue to offer constructive support and assistance to Pakistan in its continuing efforts to improve laws on the financing of the fight against terrorism.
“As chairman and co-chairman of the FATF for the Asia-Pacific Joint Group, China will continue to maintain an objective, fair and constructive attitude and to participate in the relevant discussions,” he added.
Geng stressed that the FATF is an important platform for combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism, he said his goal is to help countries improve their money laundering and terrorist financing laws so that the international financial system is not abused.
It was reported on Thursday that the FATF had expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s results on the action plan given by the global monitoring body.
Official sources have said that Pakistan will now focus on mobilizing increased diplomatic support from voting members of the FATF plenary meeting.
In order to avoid the blacklist, Pakistan needs the support of three countries. To get out of the gray and land on the white list, Islamabad needs 12 votes out of a total of 39.
There is a possibility of a third scenario whereby Pakistan could remain on the gray list for another 3 to 6 months. After gaining support from the United States, it becomes clear that Pakistan could be excluded from the gray list and placed on the safest white list.
