Chinese FM Says Nations Should Fight Disease Together As A Family

BEIJING – The new outbreak of coronavirus pneumonia has once again made people realize that this is a time when traditional and non-traditional security issues are interconnected and local problems easily become global and vice versa, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Germany.
No country can thrive on its own or tackle all the challenges alone, because our interests are closely linked, he said.
Global governance and international coordination must be strengthened without delay.
Wang called for practicing multilateralism in his speech on Saturday at the 56th Munich Security Conference.
As the world enters the era of globalization, Wang said that people must transcend the East-West and North-South divides “to see our shared planet as a community for all”, and must go beyond ideological gap and take into account historical and cultural differences.
He said, see the international community as one world family.
Speaking on how to better translate multilateralism into action, Wang said that countries should pursue shared development, the main countries should set a good example and nations should respect international standards and see the world as a community.
In his speech, Wang also explained the current situation in China’s fight against the epidemic under the leadership of President Xi Jinping.
The senior diplomat noted that China’s tough and deep measures are paying off, and although the epidemic has posed a serious challenge to China’s economic and social development, “the difficulties will be temporary and short-lived”.
“With its strong resilience, potential and vitality, the Chinese economy is well positioned to overcome all risks and challenges. The fundamentals of solid economic growth have not changed and will not change,” said Wang.
Quoting the Chinese who said that “after the storm, the rainbow has come”, Wang said that consumer demand and the country’s growth potential will be quickly released and the country will benefit from a stronger and more sustainable economic and social development.
The country has effectively curbed the spread of the epidemic beyond its borders and “has made extraordinary efforts and a heavy sacrifice” for it, said Wang.
He added that China was not fighting alone because the international community had provided valuable moral and material support.
This joint struggle strengthens the friendship between the Chinese people and people around the world, he said.
In an interview with Reuters on Friday, Wang said that China has earned the respect and recognition of the international community for its efforts and even its sacrifices in the fight against new coronavirus pneumonia.
The country has introduced the most comprehensive, stringent and comprehensive prevention and control measures, such as the establishment of a national mechanism to mobilize resources across China, said Wang.
Many measures, he said, go far beyond what is required by the International Health Regulations and the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
As a major responsible country, China has acted openly and transparently from the start, disseminating related information to the world and seeking international cooperation to prevent the spread of the epidemic around the world, said Wang.
According to published statistics, the number of confirmed cases outside of China is less than 1% of the total.
“The virus respects no borders. It requires a collective response from the international community,” said Wang.
While some countries are implementing reasonable enhanced inspection measures, Wang said some have “overreacted” by adopting measures that have either stopped people-to-people exchanges or evacuated people from places where only isolated cases or where the epidemic is not serious.
“Their overreaction has caused unnecessary panic and is not in line with WHO recommendations,” said the diplomat, adding that there is a question mark over whether such measures contribute to a joint response to the epidemic.
“I believe that as the epidemic is gradually brought under control, these countries may consider relaxing the restrictions.
Ultimately, normal trade and cooperation between the countries must be maintained.”
