Erdogan to Travel to Germany for Talks in Libya on January 19

ANKARA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to pay a day trip to Berlin on January 19 to participate in the Berlin conference on Libya, the presidency announced on Monday.
The Presidency did not provide further details of the trip.
Erdogan’s planned visit, however, coincides with the day that Germany plans to host a peace summit to restore order to the conflict-ravaged by North African nation, a spokesperson said on Monday’s government speech.
“Preparation for such a conference is underway. It should, in any event, take place in January here in Berlin,” said Steffen Seibert.
The spokesperson said he could not yet provide a firm date, but confirmed that Sunday, January 19 was a possible option.
The confirmation of Berlin came after a series of talks between the parties likely to attend such a summit.
Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday in Moscow, where the two sides – mediators of the crisis – called for international efforts to end the conflicts in Libya. Merkel said the United Nations would hold talks if a meeting were to take place in Berlin. She said the warring parties in Libya should play a major role if a solution were to be found.
She added that the goal was to give Libya the chance to become a sovereign and peaceful country.
Merkel also spoke to Egyptian Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi on Monday on the matter, according to the Egyptian government.
Following talks between Presidents Putin and Erdogan in Istanbul, Turkey and Russia jointly called on Wednesday for an end to hostilities, the normalization of life in Tripoli and other cities, and negotiated peace talks by the UN.
Turkey supports Tripoli-based National Accord Government (GNA), while Russian military contractors have been deployed alongside the Libyan National Army (LNA)
