EU will not Recognize any Change Regarding Jerusalem ‘

BRUSSELS – The EU will not recognize any change regarding Jerusalem, a senior EU official said on Wednesday.
“As has been reaffirmed in many of the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council, the EU will not recognize any changes to pre-1967 borders, including Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties,” said EU spokesman.
The remarks came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that if he won the general elections scheduled for September 17, he would annex parts of the occupied lands in the West Bank, including the northern Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley.
The EU spokesman said the policy of building and expanding settlements, including in East Jerusalem, was illegal under international law.
This would undermine the viability of the two-State solution and the prospects for a lasting peace, the spokesman added.
Some 650,000 Israeli Jews currently live in more than 100 settlements built since 1967, when Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Palestinians view these territories – as well as the Gaza Strip – as an integral part of creating a future Palestinian state.
International law considers both the West Bank and East Jerusalem as “occupied territories” and considers that any activity of building Jewish settlements is illegal.
