Japanese Pm Names Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

TOKYO – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe named US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last fall, after receiving a request from the US government, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday.
The report follows Trump’s statement Friday that Abe had appointed him to the Nobel Peace Prize for opening talks and easing tensions with North Korea.
The Japanese leader had given him “the best copy” of a five-page nomination letter, Trump told a press conference at the White House.
The US government has been probing the nomination of the Noble Peace Prize after last June’s Trump summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the first meeting between a North Korean leader and a US president in office said the Asahi, citing an unidentified Japanese government source.
Ministry was enlightened about Trumps remarks, but will refrain from commenting on the interactions between the two leaders, a spokesman for the Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said.
The White House did not comment immediately when it was contacted by Reuters.
The Nobel Foundation website states that a Nobel Peace Prize nomination can be submitted by anyone who fulfills the nomination criteria, including current heads of state. According to the rules of the foundation, names and other information about unsuccessful applications can not be disclosed for 50 years.
