Johnson Says A New Deal with Trump Could Replace Iran’s Nuclear Pact

LONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked US President Donald Trump on Tuesday to replace the Iranian nuclear agreement with his own new agreement to ensure that the Islamic Republic does not have an atomic weapon.
“If we want to get rid of it, let’s replace it and replace it with the Trump agreement,” Johnson said of the 2015 nuclear weapons control agreement with Tehran.
“It would be a great way to move forward.”
“President Trump is a great creator, on his own. Let’s work together to replace the JCPOA and get the Trump deal,” Johnson told the BBC.
As part of the agreement negotiated in 2015, known as the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA), Iran agreed with China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States to restrict its nuclear program.
But in 2018, Trump withdrew from the agreement. European powers have repeatedly said they still support the agreement, although Tehran announced earlier this month that it would lift restrictions on uranium enrichment, another blow to the agreement.
“If you get rid of this nuclear agreement, the JCPOA, that’s what Trump wants.”
“I want to tell our American friends that they have to somehow prevent the Iranians from acquiring a nuclear weapon,” Johnson said.
“From the American point of view, this is a faulty agreement, it is expiring and was negotiated by President (Barack) Obama. From his point of view, it has many flaws.”
Trump is confident he could still renegotiate a new nuclear deal with Tehran, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said earlier this month after Iran announced it would withdraw from the 2015 nuclear pact.
“I don’t want a military conflict between us, the United States and Iran, let’s stop,” Johnson said.
