Pakistan and Russia Agree to Launch A Joint Diplomatic Effort to “Restore Peace” in the Region

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Russia agreed to launch a joint effort to “restore peace” in the region with growing tensions between the United States and Iran, Radio Pakistan reported Friday.
The agreement came during a telephone conversation between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday.
During the phone call, the two leaders discussed issues related to rising tensions in the Middle East, including the general situation in the region.
Qureshi told his Russian counterpart that an increase in tensions between states could be a blow to peace and stability in the region.
He added that both sides, Iran and the United States, should exercise restraint to overcome the current situation.
Qureshi, while reiterating Pakistan’s position, said Pakistan will not be a party to a new conflict in the region and that its lands will not be used against a regional or neighbouring country.
The two foreign ministers also agreed to combine their efforts for regional peace.
A day earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had declared that Pakistan “would never be involved” in the wars of other countries and declared that Pakistan would become a country that “would serve as an example to other Muslim countries in the world and lead them.”
“Pakistan will never participate in anyone’s war again,” he said.
“Pakistan will become a country that promotes peace in other countries.”
He also said that Pakistan would do everything possible to achieve peace between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
“This [peace between the United States and Iran] will be our greatest effort,” said the Pakistani prime minister.
“I even told Donald Trump that he would help establish peace between Iran and the United States,” he added.
In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged Iran and the United States indirectly to “avoid unilateral action and the use of force,” and to abide by the Charter of the United Nations, which emphasizes territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“All parties are invited to exercise maximum restraint, to constructively commit themselves to calm the situation and resolve the problems through diplomatic means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” said Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
