Pakistan Likely to Host 2022 Asia Cup

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A day after the 2021 Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, reports are now emerging that the 2022 edition of the tournament could be hosted by Pakistan.
Sri Lankan Cricket general manager, Ashley de Silva, announced on Wednesday that this year’s Asian Cup would not go as planned. He was quoted as telling reporters:
“Due to the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to play the tournament in June of this year.”
Pakistan and Sri Lanka are set to host the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Asian Cup respectively, according to a report released by ESPN Cricinfo.
Previously, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Ehsan Mani, also stressed that it would be difficult to host the Asian Cup this year if India qualified for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC ), Mani had informed reporters:
“The Asian Cup was supposed to be held last year, but it has been postponed to this year. At the moment, it looks like the Asian Cup will not be held this year as the WTC Finals are scheduled to take place in June. The Sri Lankan team had said that it would try to host the tournament in June. The dates clash. We believe the tournament will not take place and we may have to push the tournament until 2023.”
The last Asian Cup was held in 2018. The 2020 edition of the event also had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
