Qureshi, French FM for Enhanced Cooperation to Control COVID 19

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi during a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian discussed in detail the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic as well as ways to strengthen cooperation to combat the spread of the disease.
Expressing his deep concern at the loss of precious lives, Foreign Minister Qureshi welcomed the measures taken by the French authorities to contain the virus and thanked his counterpart for taking care of 13 Pakistanis affected in France.
He also briefed Foreign Minister Le Drian on measures underway in Pakistan to contain the epidemic, Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday in a press release.
Foreign Minister Qureshi said the number of people affected in Pakistan due to COVID-19 is increasing.
COVID-19 has spread to almost all countries of the world and the situation requires a coordinated approach by the international community to combat its spread, he added.
In light of the situation in Iran, Foreign Minister Qureshi stressed the need to immediately lift the sanctions and extend humanitarian aid to allow the Iranian authorities to save precious human lives.
He also expressed deep concern over the continuing communications and blocking of movements in India’s occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which were depriving eight million Kashmiris of essential information and essential medical supplies needed to effectively contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
To enable developing countries to face the crisis and mitigate the economic fallout, he stressed the Pakistani Prime Minister’s call for debt restructuring and sought the support and understanding of France, as an important member of the EU, the G-7 and United Nations Security Council, on these issues.
French Foreign Minister Approves Qureshi’s Assessment of the Situation in Iran and the Need for Debt Relief for Developing Countries and Expressed Intention to Lift the Lifting of Sanctions on Iran to the IMF, as well as to provide debt relief to developing countries at the G-20.
Foreign Minister Qureshi has suggested that, given the situation resulting from COVID-19, the two sides could hold the next round of bilateral political consultations, which was scheduled for March 26, 2020, by video conference.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Le Drian, thanked the Pakistani Minister of Foreign Affairs for his expression of solidarity and recognized the need for enhanced cooperation to deal with the crisis. The two ministers also agreed to stay in touch.
