Taliban Delegation Visits Iran After Russia

TEHRAN – A Taliban delegation visited Tehran to hold talks with Irani officials regarding peace talks on Afghanistan, Tasnim New reported on Tuesday.
The delegation was led by Abdul Salam Hanafi, deputy head of Taliban’s political office in Qatar, said Suhail Shaheen, a spokesperson for the group.
The sides talked latest developments, progress and safety of Iran’s projects in Afghanistan and ways to sustainable peace, Shaheen said on Twitter.
He said that the Taliban appreciates neighboring countries’ “positive role” in peace process.
Taliban’s visit to Iran comes after US President Donald Trump cancelled peace talks with the Taliban, citing a deadly attack in Kabul.
The attack and the cancellation of talks came after US negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban finalized a draft agreement following months of talks in Qatar.
Earlier, a three-member Taliban delegation led by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai visited Moscow and met with Russia’s presidential envoy Zamir Kabulov.
Shaheen said that the Russian endorsed Taliban’s stance and backed withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan according to the agreement.
