The Death Toll from Coronavirus Exceeds 21,000; World Leaders to Hold Crisis Talks

UNITED NATIONS – World leaders are scheduled to hold online crisis talks on Thursday on the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced three billion people into the abduction and killed more than 21,000 people.
With the disease ripping the world apart at a terrifying rate, warnings are mounting on its economic consequences, with experts saying it could do more damage than the Great Depression.
And amid strife between Chinese and American leaders who is to blame, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the world to act together to end the threat.
“COVID-19 threatens all of humanity – and all of humanity must respond,” said António Guterres, appealing for $2 billion to help the world’s poor.
“Global action and solidarity are crucial,” he said.
“Individual country responses will not be enough.”
The death toll from the virus, which appeared in China late last year, has continued to grow, with the United States becoming the sixth country to reach four figures.
The rising infection rate in the United States has triggered a rush to buy guns, gun store owners told AFP, customers panicking about the social breakdown.
“Lots of people buy shotguns, handguns, AR-15s (semi-automatic rifles), everything,” said Tiffany Teasdale, who sells guns in Washington state.
“Many people are afraid that someone will break into their home … to steal money, their toilet paper, bottled water, food.”
Almost half of the U.S. population is in detention, but President Donald Trump has said he will soon decide whether unaffected parts of the country can return to work.
“We want to revive our country,” said Trump. “I’m not going to do anything rushed or rushed.
“By Easter, we will have a recommendation and maybe before Easter,” said Trump, who touted a strong American economy as he faced elections in November.
But any notion of unity after the videoconference between the G7 countries, which also includes Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, was shattered by the absence of a joint declaration – often a formality during such gatherings.
