US to Lift Sanctions on Iran, Confirms: Rouhani

This is the first condition for Iran to resume compliance with the 2015 nuclear pact.
TEHRAN – Formally confirming the vague comments from lower-ranking Iranian officials, President Rouhani said the United States has agreed to lift all sanctions against the Persian country and return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after nearly a month of negotiations in Vienna.
“We have reached a point where the Americans and Europeans are openly declaring that they have no choice but to lift the sanctions and return to the nuclear pact,” Rouhani said in a speech on Saturday night.
The lifting of sanctions was one of the four red lines of negotiations in Vienna and a prerequisite for the Iranian side to sit down and speak directly with its American counterpart, which the two hope to achieve by June 18, when the presidential elections will be held in Iran.
The JCPOA was denounced by former US President, Donald Trump, in 2018. After several warnings, a year later, Iran began a gradual withdrawal from its uranium enrichment commitments, from the agreed limit of 2 % to 60% announced in April.
The Biden administration has declared its intention to return to the JCPOA, but insisted on renegotiation, to include issues unrelated to the nuclear program, such as the design and construction of conventional weapons and missiles.
Iran has categorically rejected this request and has remained firm, despite crippling financial sanctions that have hampered its ability to fight Covid-19, among others.
Iran is ready to resume the nuclear pact, but it has also made it clear that this cannot mean less sovereignty.
